Bali isn’t just about white-sand beaches and blue waves. There’s another side to this island that’s just as captivating: Mount Batur. This mountain is one of the favorite spots for visitors to witness the beauty of Kintamani right from the rooftop of the sky. Here, you can conquer the hiking trail to the summit on their own. If you’re a true adventurer, this destination is truly made for you!

As the sky is still dark, it slowly begins to reveal its beauty as the morning sun rises. The trail isn’t too difficult, so beginner hikers needn’t be afraid to visit here.

Introduction to Mount Batur

Mount Batur stands majestically in the Kintamani area of Bangli, Bali. As a volcano that remains active to this day, Batur holds the distinction of being Indonesia’s first geopark to receive international recognition from UNESCO. There’s a wide variety of activities to enjoy here, ranging from adrenaline-pumping sunrise hikes and jeep tours around Mount Batur to soaking in natural hot springs and relaxing at Kintamani’s picturesque cafes with direct views of the mountain.

At an elevation of about 1,717 meters above sea level, Mount Batur is considered a relatively easy mountain to climb. The hike takes only a few hours, unlike other high mountains, it doesn’t take days to complete. Once you’ve conquered the summit, there are still many other attractions around Kintamani that would be a shame to miss.

How to Get to Mount Batur

Mount Batur is about 2.5 to 3 hours from Seminyak. Since it’s quite far from the city center,
you’ll need a car to get there—you can either rent a car or book a tour to the area. You might
also consider staying in Kintamani to experience camping with a view of Lake Batur.

To get the best moments and views during the hike, you can start climbing around 3:30 a.m.
WITA; it takes 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the summit of Mount Batur. Around 5 a.m., the sun
will begin to rise and slowly illuminate Mount Batur, which is shrouded in thick clouds. If
you’re nervous about hiking alone, you can definitely hire a guide to accompany you and lead
the way to the summit. Hiring a guide costs about $8.35 USD or 150,000 IDR.

What Items Should You Bring When Visiting Mount Batur?

Hiking definitely requires safety gear to avoid any unwanted incidents. For this reason, hikers
are required to wear a jacket; the extremely cold morning temperatures mean hikers must be
properly protected to avoid hypothermia. Additionally, other essential gear such as hiking
boots, trekking poles, and a flashlight is necessary to ensure you have light when it gets dark.
Don’t forget to bring a backpack to carry water, snacks, and other important items for the hike.

Things to Do at Mount Batur

1. Jeep Tour

If you’re not the type who enjoys mountain climbing, there are still other options for
an adventure that won’t leave you exhausted—this jeep tour is the perfect solution.
You’ll be taken on a tour around Mount Batur, visit the black lava fields, and check
out some photo spots that are sure to be Instagram-worthy!

2. Natural Hot Springs from Mount Batur

The cool climate of Kintamani makes hot springs the perfect escape to warm up.
There are several recommended hot springs, such as Batur Natural Hot Spring, where
for just $13.33 USD or Rp 240,000, you get a complete package that includes a towel,
an à la carte menu, soap and shampoo, and a locker.

People of all ages can enjoy this activity, the relaxing atmosphere and soothing views
will make you want to stay at this hot spring. Especially since vacations can be
exhausting, the mineral-rich water helps relieve muscle and joint pain, improves
blood circulation, and, of course, promotes healthy skin.

3. Stylish Cafe with Stunning Views

In addition to trekking and hot springs, Kintamani also holds a hidden paradise for coffee
lovers and scenery enthusiasts: a row of cafes standing majestically on the edge of the
caldera, facing directly toward Mount Batur and the lake. Sitting back and sipping a cup of
Kintamani’s signature Robusta coffee, visitors can watch the clouds slowly drift across the
mountain’s slopes or see the morning mist dance over the calm surface of the lake.

Some cafes are even designed with an open-air concept, featuring seats that look directly out
over the caldera’s precipice, creating the sensation of enjoying coffee above the clouds. The
cool, highland atmosphere, combined with ever changing views throughout the day, from
morning mist and clear blue skies to golden sunset silhouettes, makes the cafes in Kintamani
the perfect place to unwind, capture memorable moments, or simply linger and enjoy one of
Bali’s best volcanic panoramas.
